Save Our State Parks
On June 21 our community came out to March and Rally in support of keeping the Benicia State Recreation Area and the Benicia Capitol State Historic Park (which includes the Fischer-Hanlon House) open, click here for a YouTube video of the day.
The Issue - CA State Parks
The CA State 2009-2010 budget crisis will close 220 State Parks [State Parks Closure List - May 28, 2009] including all that are located in Solano County, leaving 59 to remain open because they generate enough revenue [Open Units - May 28, 2009]. These two Solano County parks are the Benicia Capitol State Historic Park and the Benicia State Recreation Area.

Governor Schwarzenegger has submitted his 2009-10 May Revision and proposed fixing the budget crisis by removing ALL existing tax dollar funding for public access to State Parks.

Fundamentally this move creates the situation that each State Park must become it's own profit center (fees collected must fully pay for expenses) to be allowed to stay open to the public. The money included in the 2009-10 fiscal year is sufficient to orderly close (place them into caretaker status) the State Parks and transition the administration of the few that can remain open. By the 2010-11 fiscal year, our state tax dollars will no longer provide public access to our state owned parks.
